I’m back home. My trip to the UK was amazing and I am excited to sit back and think about it and process it and also to get back to work!
I have a book to write (re-invigorated by a gorgeous building I saw on the trip), and new things to make for my Magical Writer’s School, an oracle reading to do for a client, and an exciting new offer to create.
And…
I just caught myself shopping on Etsy for earrings. (Remember, I have no mailing address!)
My Mom used to call it, ‘making muffins’ because whenever she was avoiding something, or was overwhelmed by to-dos, she’d make muffins.
Me? I browse the online world for magical things.
The interesting thing is that I used to do that for hours. I would sit down at my computer TO WORK and then shake my head a little a few hours later and realize that I hadn’t done a thing and was now the proud owner of yet another beautiful crystal (NOT that there’s anything wrong with that!)
That didn’t happen today. Today I caught myself after 10 minutes; coming up for air to find myself scrolling through page 19 of 47 pages of crystal and silver dangle earrings.
What’s the difference?
I have discovered the power of turning everything and anything that I am doing into a kind-of oracle reading.
Because everything - everything - has the potential to have a message for you.
How?
Make as much of what you do as conscious as possible. I have repeatedly stopped myself mid-action/avoidance/shop/bite/scroll and wondered (out loud): What’s going on here? and then answered the question as honestly as I could. Over and over and over again.
Remove all shame/blame/guilt about what you find yourself doing. I found that squishing down the guilt actually kept me going back to the avoidance tactics. Now when I stop myself mid-action/avoidance/shop/bite/scroll and wonder: What’s going on here? I am as kind and curious as possible. Because if everything could be an oracle reading, then there’s no room for guilt. It’s all an interesting message.
Repeating these two steps over and over and over again mean that now I very rarely hide things from myself. I very rarely stay in avoidance for very long, and when I DO, it’s conscious.
So when I discovered a few minutes ago that I was, in fact, making muffins, I smiled kindly at myself, asked what was going on, and listened carefully to the answer. Now I am back on track to get a few things done, and now I also remember that I am still working within jetlag and re-entry, so I will stop much earlier than usual and let myself rest.
Thank you Etsy shopping and magical world browsing for the reminder.
What about you?
What do you catch yourself doing when you think you should be doing something else? How do you ‘make muffins’?
And how can you use that as an Oracle message to be kinder to yourself?
The more you can practice this, the more magical your life will become.
I promise.
With so much love,
What a beautiful phrase to dissolve guilt and bring transformative understanding instead. Lovely! Thank you.
