Hello! It’s been ages, how have you been? How’s your heart?
Me? I’ve been crazy busy in ‘real’ life AND I have - after a long time of wondering - also had a beautiful breakthrough in how I want to offer my work to you and to the world going forward.
I’m deeply excited about it.
And I found it by doing something a bit radical: I found it by sticking with something.
In my class today we were talking about (as I am prone to do lately) our attention, and how precious it is.
I won’t go into it here, but the short version is that if you want to change your life in any way - in my opinion - one of the first steps is re-claim-ing your attention.
To do one thing, deeply.
One of the beginning-to-be-forgotten secrets to making magic in our lives is this one: do one thing, deeply.
If you were a character in a movie and you wanted to cast a spell, would you do it while scrolling on your phone?
No.
If you were in a part of the movie where you had to use your creativity to find your way out of a predicament, would you also listen to a podcast?
No.
If you were sitting across the table from a wizard and you knew that there was a pearl of wisdom that you could gain to help you unlock some wisdom from your soul, would you ask him to hang on a moment while you looked up ‘wizard’ on your phone?
No.
If you wanted to deeply get to know a new love, would you do it by going out on dates with a whole bunch of different people?
No.
Would you learn to play a guitar by picking up a flute, an accordion, and a watermelon?
No.
Those things sound ridiculous, but it’s what we do.
I made a ‘vision board’ at the beginning of the year. A big one. I led a group in working with their boards over a few weeks (a version of that workshop is coming again in the new year) and over the last year, I have stayed with that board. I have stayed with the most powerful image.
And it was staying with that board; committing to being with that board; letting myself to wonder about it over and over and over again, that finally led me to the clarity I have had this week.
Clarity that is the answer to a question I have been asking for years.
Staying with it. One thing. Deeply.
I encourage you - especially if you are a seeker or a wonderer or a dreamer, or if you are feeling lost or befuddled in any way - to choose something that touches you; something that you are really drawn to: your word of the year, a quote that touches you, a sentence found in an old journal, an image, a book, a single poem, one room in your house, one project that wants your attention, and stay with it.
Stay with it even when you are drawn to move away. Stay with it even when you are bored. Stay with it even if you think it has told you everything it has for you. Stay. Just a little longer. Let the deeper wisdom come.
Trust yourself.
We look everywhere for magic, but I’m finding more and more that too much looking can mean we miss it altogether.
Stay. Stop looking and find truth.
One thing, deeply.

Really great advice, thank you Meghan. Consistency is the key, I agree. It’s just so hard to stick to one thing when there are so many new shiny things available every single day via the internet. I’m committed to my writing but am so often torn between writing articles, poetry, planning a book idea, reading about writing, watching interviews with writers and so on. It is a daily battle to commit. I’m looking forward to seeing what your exciting idea is!
Oh Meghan I SOOO needed to hear this as we begin this new year. I'm going to do the one thing. Promise. Thank you.
