Right now I am in London. I am sitting on my friend Susannah’s guest bed, feeling somehow out of space and time because I have just finished leading a really magical and successful retreat in gorgeous and very sunny Bath.
Every bit of this moment can be traced back to the day that I nervously clicked publish on my very first blog post back in 2006. Back then the online world was quite different. Nobody was really selling anything (well, one person was selling painted rocks and there were a few Etsy shops), and everyone had the time and the attention to not only write long posts but also to read and comment on everyone else’s long posts.
We poured our hearts out onto our little imperfect web pages, created long blogroll lists on the sidebars (once we learned how to do that), and found people we ‘resonated’ with (to use the lingo of the time) to connect to. We wrote for each other. We wrote to really connect and to feel less alone in our weirdness. We wrote for the sheer joy of writing.
It was heaven. I have missed it ever since, and I am forever grateful for it because it was during those days that I really began to understand the magical power of writing.
I began to experiment, taking my writing further and further into the realms of possibility. I wrote a very unusual novel, changed everything about my life, and began a practice of writing every single day no matter what.
Over the years, life has gotten more and more and more magical and my writing has gotten more and more and more purposeful. As I write I know that I am casting spells and creating magic that is going to ripple out and change the world.
My underlying self has always been wildly curious. I love the bonkers, and I have a tendency to believe in anything. But there is one thing that I believe with my whole heart: that words are spells, writing is magic, and that we are more powerful than we can possibly imagine.
This is me, coming what feels like full circle, to an online space where I feel like I can write about the things I love, look for true connection, and also share what I have discovered about the power of writing magic.
I’m sitting here after writing an entire trip, retreat, and experience into being. I can’t wait to see what magic will come from writing here in this beautiful new space.
Anything is possible. Words are spells. Writing is magic.
“We wrote to really connect and to feel less alone in our weirdness. We wrote for the sheer joy of writing.” This beautifully describes my memory of those early days of blogging. I loved it too. It’s where friendships were forged and magic was shared across space and time (including ours) you’ve inspired me to return to it here. ✨
I’m so with you on this Meghan! The day I created a blog I exploded with pure joy. Being able to combine words with beautiful photos or art and the ease of sharing links to incredible discoveries on line was so magical! Being here feels really magically good again.
